Platinum has created another stunning Maki-e pen, the Kurikara-ken. The Kurikara-ken is a sword held by Fudo Myo-o, one of the Godai Myo-o (Five Great Kings). According to the legend, Fudo Myo-o changed himself into a huge sword when he had to battle over divine power against a devil. The devil also changed himself into a sword. Then Fudo Myo-o transformed into a dragon and destroys the demon. The stunning and detailed image of the Kurikara Ryu-o (the dragon) swallowing the devil transformed into a huge sword is dynamically expressed on the body of the pen through taka maki-e technique, in which charcoal powers are applied several times to raise the area after matte-finished black urushi lacquer is applied on the ebonite body. The sharpness of the huge sword which is the devil is expressed by using silver powers through taka maki-e technique. Black lacquer is applied over the silver parts which are raised to express the finer details. The very detailed finish give volume to the body design while providing an unparalleled presence across the entire fountain pen.
