Frequently Asked Questions

What nib sizes does the Monteverde MP1 come in? +
The MP1 fountain pen comes in extra fine, fine, medium, broad, a 1.1mm stub, and the Omniflex flex nib. Each pen is equipped with a steel, German-made JoWo #6 nib and a plasma-treated feed, and each pen holds 2mL of ink.
How does the Omniflex nib write? +
The Omniflex writes smoothly at a regular pressure and opens to a broader, wetter line when you bear down, giving you real line variation. As soft steel, it flexes less dramatically than a vintage or gold flex nib, but adds some flair to your writing. It's Monteverde's own flex nib, available across much of Monteverde's lineup, and isn't unique to the MP1.
Which MP1 nib size should I choose? +
The best MP1 nib for most writers is the fine or medium, with the fine suiting small handwriting and daily notes and the medium laying down a wetter, more expressive line. Go for extra fine if you write small or work on less absorbent paper, and reach for the 1.1mm stub if you want easy line variation in ordinary writing. Pick the Omniflex only if flex is your main desire, since it rewards a deliberate hand more than fast note-taking.
How does the Monteverde MP1 compare to the TWSBI ECO? +
Both models rank highly in the budget piston-filler fountain pen class, but the MP1 features an anodized aluminum cap on most finishes, a Lock-It piston knob, and a flex nib option the ECO doesn't have. The ECO's piston mechanism can be completely disassembled for deeper cleaning, whereas Monteverde instructs users not to unscrew the front section or piston.
Does the MP1's Lock-It piston keep ink from leaking? +
Yes, the Lock-It piston is designed to stop the filling knob from twisting in transit and accidentally leaking. To lock the knob after filling, push the knob in until the two alignment dots meet. The sealed cap does the day-to-day work of preventing dry starts.
Is the MP1's demonstrator body durable enough for everyday carry? +
Yes. The MP1 pairs a polycarbonate resin barrel with an anodized aluminum cap rather than the more brittle acrylic some demonstrators use. The metal cap absorbs the knocks a pen receives while in a bag, and it screws closed in about three turns, sealing the nib.
Does the MP1 fountain pen use cartridges, or only bottled ink? +
This fountain pen fills only from bottled ink through its built-in piston, and doesn't take cartridges or ink from a converter. You fill it by dipping the nib fully and turning the piston knob to draw ink into the barrel. Several MP1 models on this page ship with a matching bottled-ink set, so you can ink up the day your pen lands.
Does the MP1's triangular grip section suit most writers? +
The MP1's faintly triangular grip section suits most writers but can feel prescriptive if you hold a pen unusually. The soft molding guides your fingers toward a tripod grip, which many find comfortable, but if you grip high on the section or rotate the pen as you write, you might find yourself fighting it.
Can I use shimmer or sheening inks in the MP1? +
Yes, this pen handles shimmer and sheening inks well, and the clear barrel makes using them even more of a visual delight. If you're especially into the transparency of the body, look through our collection of other demonstrator fountain pens. Shimmer settles over time, so give the pen a gentle roll before writing, and flush it thoroughly when you switch inks.
