There is a moment in the quietest part of the year when nature seems to hold its breath. In this suspended stillness, Japanese tradition celebrates the shochiku-bai, Pine, Bamboo, and Plum, known as the Three Winter Friends. These plants endure the cold without yielding and are symbols of perseverance, strength, and good fortune for the year ahead.
With LA DOTTA Bamboo, SCRIBO opens a three-year trilogy inspired by these noble emblems. This edition begins the journey with the purity of bamboo, an ancient symbol of resilience, the ability to bend without breaking, and the quiet confidence to face change with balance and integrity.
In Japanese culture, bamboo is more than a plant; it is a lesson. A reminder to remain flexible, centred, and hopeful in times of transformation. SCRIBO translates this philosophy into a writing instrument where material, craft, and meaning converge.
The creation is entrusted to Urushi master Takeshi Matsuyama, guardian of a lacquer tradition that demands slowness, precision, and absolute dedication. The pen’s surface reveals the tactile texture of the Ishime finish, inspired by winter earth, while the Maki-e decoration is painted with gold and silver powders to form a bamboo motif along the body like a natural ideogram.
Even the nib carries its own tribute: a dedicated engraving, discreet and precious, visible only to the one who writes. The LA DOTTA Bamboo is available with SCRIBO’s renowned nib options, including an 18k gold nib in a wide variety of sizes from Extra Extra Fine, Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad, Double Broad, Extra Extra Broad, to 1.1 mm Stub as well as a 14k flexible nib in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, and Broad for expressive, dynamic writing styles.
Each piece is part of a limited edition of only 68, individually numbered on the ring of the filling system alongside the inscription “Bamboo Limited Edition.” The signatures of the artist and SCRIBO appear on the cap, with SCRIBO rendered elegantly in katakana—a subtle dialogue between Italian craftsmanship and Japanese tradition.
The presentation honours the same ritual purity: a handmade wooden box, closed with a traditional Japanese cord, houses the pen. Inside, a protective pen pouch crafted from kimono fabric completes the gesture, an offering of care, heritage, and good fortune.
LA DOTTA Bamboo is an invitation to begin the New Year with clarity, tenacity, and inner momentum. It marks the first chapter of a trilogy that will continue with the timeless symbols of Pine and Plum, completing a journey through the virtues of strength, endurance, and renewal.
