Frequently Asked Questions

What types of pens and inks does the Halloween collection include? +
This collection includes fountain pens, rollerball and ballpoint pens, a mechanical pencil or two, bottled inks in the season's colors, and extras like notebooks, pen sleeves, a brass nib box, and a goose-quill pen. Like chocolates in a trick or treat bag, fountain pens make up most of this collection’s assortment, spanning every level of expertise, from first-timer to serious collector. There's also a Goldspot exclusive in the mix, the Edison Newark fountain pen. If you're looking for pens with broader autumnal vibes, our Fall Favorites collection gathers those up.
What's the difference between the fountain pens, rollerballs, and ballpoints in the collection? +
A fountain pen feeds liquid ink through a nib, the metal writing tip, for an expressive, low-pressure line, and it requires the most care. A rollerball uses liquid ink in a sealed cartridge, so it glides much like a fountain pen with none of the setup. A ballpoint uses thick, quick-drying paste and needs little to no maintenance. If you're buying for someone who isn't ready for a nib, a rollerball or ballpoint is a safe bet, though you can browse all our fountain pens if you're after a nib.
Which spooky ink colors are best for Halloween writing and journaling? +
Look for the harvest oranges and burnt browns, dark reds, and poison greens. For more drama, the literary inks are the stars: Wearingeul's Dracula is a deep crimson shot through with an icy blue shimmer that flashes violet in the light, while Frankenstein sinks into a deep purple with a murky green shimmer. Goldspot’s exclusive Robert Oster “Jersey Devil” embodies the mythological creature that, as legend has it, lives in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. A choice like Diamine Writer's Blood or Robert Oster Sinner's Blood delivers the same power in one bold, eerie color.
Do Halloween pens make good gifts for writers? +
For someone already deep into the hobby, a bottle of seasonal ink or a limited edition will scratch their collector's itch. For someone newer to the game, an affordable fountain pen with a cartridge will give them everything they need to get started the day it arrives. If you aren't sure what your recipient already has, we recommend ink, a pen case, or a starter set, which are good picks for almost anyone.
What are some affordable Halloween fountain pens and inks to start with? +
Start with the Noodler's Ahab Pumpkin, the Lamy Safari in white, or the Pilot Metropolitan. The Noodler's pens are flex-nib pens that serve real character for very little outlay, and the Metropolitan is a longtime pick for a first fountain pen. On the ink side, a single bottle of a harvest orange or a blood-red will get you that spooky aesthetic. For more entry-priced options, our clearance pens are worth a look.
Are the limited-edition pens in this collection collectible or likely to sell out? +
Yes to both. Seasonal editions like the Nahvalur Nautilus Dracula, the Retro 51 Halloween Harlequin, and the Sensa Frankenstein are made for the season, and some annual releases are numbered or capped, which is why they move quickly each October. You can see more of what's likely to sell fast in our limited edition fountain pens.
Do the fountain pens come with ink, or do I buy that separately? +
Most of the fountain pens here arrive ready to write, with a starter cartridge in the box, while a few are made to fill from a bottle of ink bought separately. The Noodler's flex-nib pens, for example, are bottle-fillers, so plan to pick up an ink you love to go with one. To be safe, check the individual pen's page to see how it fills. If cartridges, converters, and bottled ink are new to you, our guide to fountain pen converters walks through all three.
