Is the Lamy Safari a good first fountain pen? +
The Safari is tough, forgiving, and affordable enough that newcomers can practice writing on it without worrying about damaging an expensive pen. Since German industrial designer Wolfgang Fabian sketched it back in 1980, the pen hasn’t really changed: it has a lightweight ABS plastic body built to survive an overstuffed bag, a molded grip that guides your fingers into place, and a steel nib that writes cleanly straight out of the box.
Which nib size should I choose? +
For most people, a Fine or Medium is a safe first Safari nib. Medium lays down a rounder, wetter line that feels smooth on the page and exhibits the ink’s color and shading, making it a solid everyday pick. Fine delivers a thinner, controlled line that suits smaller writing, while Extra Fine is the tightest of the three, ideal if you write quite small or want the driest, most precise line. Lamy nibs run about one size broader than Japanese pens like Pilot, Sailor, and Platinum, so if you're used to a Japanese Fine, size down to a Lamy Extra Fine to get a comparable line. Save the broad or the stub calligraphy nib sizes for more decorative writing or if you commonly write on fountain pen-friendly paper.
How should I choose between fountain pens, rollerballs, ballpoints, and pencils? +
The fountain pen is the flagship and lays down the wettest, most expressive line. The rollerball feels close to a fountain pen but skips the maintenance required of one, so it's a good pick if you like a smooth, bold line and value convenience. Lamy ballpoint pens are everyday workhorses, less likely to dry out and able to handle carbon copies and sticky notes without issue. The mechanical pencil rounds out the set with a 0.5mm lead and the same triangular grip, drawing students and note-takers to it. What you pick really comes down to whether you prioritize the tactile experience of writing or grab-and-go convenience.
Can I change the Safari's nib to a different size later? +
You can swap the Safari's nib yourself in about a minute without tools. Lamy uses a slide-on steel nib unit, the Z50, that pulls straight off the feed and pushes back on, and the same nib fits other Lamy fountain pens in this family, so a nib you buy for a Safari will also drop onto an Al-Star or a Vista. That means you’re not locked into the size you pick today: you can start with a Medium and add a Fine or Extra Fine later without buying a whole new pen.
What's the difference between the Safari and the AL-Star? +
The Safari’s body is molded ABS plastic, whereas the AL-Star’s body is finished with anodized aluminum. Because they share identical nibs, feeds, ergonomic grip shapes, and cartridge-or-converter filling systems, they write exactly alike. The AL-Star is a little heavier, at around 22 grams to the Safari's 17, comes in its own finishes, and carries a higher price for the metal build, though the aluminum actually dents and scratches a bit more easily than the Safari's plastic. Both sit alongside the Vista and the LX in the wider Lamy lineup if you want to see the full range.
What refills do Safari pens use? +
The fountain pen uses proprietary T10 ink cartridges, and one blue cartridge ships in the box, or you can purchase the Z28 converter separately for bottled ink. The rollerball uses the M63 refill in medium and broad and in black, blue, red, and green. The ballpoint uses the M16, available in fine, medium, and broad in the same four colors. Does the Safari come as a stylus? +
Yes! The Safari Note is Lamy's first digital pen, built in the same Safari body shape you already know. Reach for the stylus if you have an Apple iPad running iOS 12.2 or later and want to take notes or sketch with the familiar feel of a Safari. The Note comes in All Black Matte, Red Gloss, Steel Matte Black, and White Gloss, and the tip is replaceable. How durable is the Safari for everyday carry and travel? +
The Safari’s ABS plastic body is designed to withstand the knocks and drops of daily carry, and the snap-on cap keeps the nib from drying out between uses. For flying, the usual advice applies: keep your fountain pen stored nib-up and full of ink so that cabin-pressure changes don’t cause it to leak. Treated well, it’s a pen you can toss in a bag every day for years without babying it.
Does the Safari's triangular grip work for left-handed writers? +
The grip, which guides your thumb and first two fingers into a tripod hold, works well for many left-handers and is Safari’s signature feature. You can also find Lamy’s dedicated left-hand nib among other refills and accessories. If you write with an underwriter or overwriter left-hand style, the fixed grip can start to feel restrictive, and a minority of users genuinely dislike it.
