Frequently Asked Questions

What nib sizes does the Pilot Prera come in? +
The Prera nib comes as a fine or medium and sometimes as a 1.1mm calligraphy stub, all stainless steel. Since every color shares the same resin body, snap cap, and cartridge-converter filling, nib size is the major decision to make here. We use the fine and medium as everyday round nibs and the 1.1mm stub, also labeled Calligraphy Medium, for line variation.
Should I choose a fine or medium nib? +
Choose the fine if you write small or want a crisp, precise line, and the medium if you want a wetter, smoother line with more expression on the page. Pilot's Japanese nibs run about a grade finer than Western ones, so writers coming from a European medium often find the Prera medium narrower than they expect.
What is the Pilot Prera's calligraphy stub nib used for? +
The calligraphy stub adds line variation and lays down a broad downstroke with thin cross-strokes. If you want to practice lettering or add character to your journal, give it a go. Writers trying their first stub tend to keep it inked, since it delivers expression without the fussy writing angle a true italic demands.
How does the Pilot Prera compare to the Pilot Metropolitan? +
The Prera trades the Metropolitan's heavier brass barrel for a light resin body, making it slightly more portable. Both use the Pilot cartridge-converter filling and share the brand’s dependable steel nibs, so write similarly. The Metropolitan gives you a solid, cigar-shaped metal starter, while the Prera adds demonstrator finishes so you can admire your ink in its barrel. Look through our Pilot pen lineup to compare these and other models side by side.
Will fountain pen ink stain the clear Prera demonstrator body? +
For the most part, no. The exception is any heavily saturated or notoriously staining ink, which can leave a faint tint in any demonstrator and is best kept out of a clear pen. Flush the pen when you change inks to keep it looking clear. If you love bold, saturated colors, a solid Prera finish is the safer home for them, while the clear demonstrators, part of our wide range of demonstrator fountain pens, are happiest with standard inks.
Does the Pilot Prera come with a converter for bottled ink? +
Yes, it comes with a converter and black ink cartridge. The Prera fits Pilot's CON-40 converter, along with the older CON-20 and CON-50, but not the larger CON-70, which is too big for the slim barrel.
Is the Pilot Prera comfortable to write with, given its small size? +
When posted, the Prera grows to roughly 5.3 inches, a natural writing length. Capped, it measures about 4.8 inches and weighs only around half an ounce, so it’s light and easy to carry. People with larger hands sometimes find it short even when it’s posted, so opt for a bigger pen if you like some extra room on your barrel.
Is the Pilot Prera a good fountain pen for beginners? +
It’s a strong choice for beginners and a natural step up from an entry-level model, with a dependable steel nib, simple filling mechanism, and a light body that’s easy to handle. For a first fountain pen, the medium nib is the more forgiving pick, since the Japanese fine writes very thin. If you’re still deciding where to begin, we suggest browsing other beginner fountain pens to see how the Prera stacks up.
